Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic condition that can cause redness, flushing, bumps, and visible blood vessels. Treatment can help manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that most often affects the cheeks, nose, and forehead. Symptoms can vary from person to person and may come and go over time.

Rosacea can sometimes resemble acne, eczema, or an allergic reaction because these conditions may share similar symptoms. In some people, rosacea may also affect the eyes. Steele Creek Dermatology evaluates rosacea and other inflammatory skin conditions through our medical dermatology services.

COMMON ROSACEA SYMPTOMS

  • Persistent facial redness
  • Frequent flushing or blushing
  • Small red or pus-filled bumps
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Facial swelling
  • Dry or flaky skin
  • Eye irritation in some patients

WHAT CAUSES ROSACEA?

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, and symptoms may be influenced by individual triggers. Identifying what contributes to your flare-ups can be an important part of managing the condition.

Triggers vary from person to person, so keeping track of when symptoms appear or worsen may help you and your provider recognize patterns. Avoiding known triggers may help reduce the frequency or severity of some flare-ups.

How is rosacea treated?

There is currently no cure for rosacea, but rosacea treatment can help control redness, bumps, irritation, and other symptoms. The appropriate plan depends on the type and severity of your rosacea and how your skin responds to treatment.

Treatment may include topical medications or oral medications such as antibiotics. Light- or laser-based treatments may also be considered for certain symptoms, including persistent redness or visible blood vessels.

Steele Creek Dermatology also offers IPL treatment for redness and vascular concerns. Whether IPL or another option is appropriate for rosacea depends on your symptoms, skin, and provider evaluation.

No. Rosacea and acne are different skin conditions, although rosacea can sometimes cause bumps that resemble acne. A dermatology evaluation can help determine which condition is causing your symptoms.

No. Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition and cannot be spread from one person to another.

Triggers vary from person to person. Recognizing patterns in when symptoms worsen can help identify individual triggers and may make flare-ups easier to manage.

There is currently no comprehensive cure for rosacea, but treatment can help control symptoms and reduce flare-ups.

Consider seeing a dermatologist if you have persistent facial redness, recurring flushing, bumps, visible blood vessels, irritation, or symptoms that are becoming difficult to manage. A provider can evaluate your skin and recommend an appropriate rosacea treatment plan.
