Hair Loss & Alopecia

Hair loss may develop gradually or in patches and can have many causes. An evaluation can help determine the cause and appropriate treatment options.

What are hair loss and alopecia?

Alopecia is a general term for partial or complete hair loss. Hair loss can occur when the normal hair growth cycle is disrupted or when hair follicles are affected by another condition. Depending on the cause, thinning may develop gradually or appear as more noticeable patches.

Some forms of alopecia involve the immune system, while others may be related to genetics, hormonal changes, aging, infections, or underlying medical conditions. Because there are different types of hair loss, an evaluation is an important first step in determining the cause.

Steele Creek Dermatology evaluates hair and scalp concerns as part of our medical dermatology services.

COMMON SIGNS OF HAIR LOSS

  • Gradual thinning
  • Widening of the part
  • Receding hairline
  • Round or patchy areas of hair loss
  • Increased shedding
  • Thinning in specific areas of the scalp

WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?

Hair loss can have many causes. Genetics, hormonal changes, infections, aging, thyroid disease, diabetes, and nutritional or eating disorders may all contribute in some patients.

Some types of alopecia are associated with immune-system activity that affects the hair follicles. Other forms may be linked to hereditary hair loss or another medical condition.

Because different causes can lead to similar patterns of thinning, your provider may review your medical history, symptoms, family history, and the pattern of hair loss before recommending treatment.

How is hair loss treated?

Hair loss treatment depends on the cause, extent of thinning, and individual patient needs. Some patients may benefit from topical or prescription medications, while other forms of alopecia may require different medical therapies.

Steele Creek Dermatology also offers PRP therapy for hair restoration. PRP is prepared from a small sample of the patient’s own blood and administered to areas of thinning hair as part of a gradual treatment process.

Not every type of hair loss responds to the same treatment. Your provider can evaluate the underlying cause and recommend an approach based on your diagnosis and goals.

THE TREATMENTS BELOW CAN HELP WITH HAIR LOSS & ALOPECIA:

Hair loss is the general experience of thinning or losing hair. Alopecia is the medical term used to describe partial or complete hair loss and includes several different types and causes.

Patchy hair loss can have several causes. Some forms of alopecia involve immune-system activity affecting the hair follicles, while other medical conditions can also contribute. A dermatology evaluation can help determine the cause.

Hair regrowth depends on the cause of the hair loss and the condition of the hair follicles. Some types may improve with treatment, while others can be more persistent. Your provider can discuss expectations after determining the diagnosis.

Yes. Steele Creek Dermatology offers PRP therapy for areas of thinning hair. Treatment is gradual, and more than one session may be recommended depending on your individual needs.

Consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice persistent thinning, sudden shedding, round patches of hair loss, or changes that concern you. A provider can help identify the cause and recommend an appropriate hair loss treatment plan.
