What is Mohs Surgery?

June 6th, 2016 | By:  Admin

Mohs surgery is a very precise and specialized skin cancer treatment where the cancer is removed in steps, one layer of tissue at a time. It is performed as an outpatient procedure. The treatment method stands apart from other skin cancer treatments because of the unique type of tissue examination it involves.

Why is It Called Mohs Surgery?

"Mohs" refers to the man who developed the technique in the 1930s, Dr. Frederic Mohs. The procedure has been refined many times over the years and was named to honor Dr. Mohs.

What is Mohs Surgery?

Skin cancer is recognized as the "tip of the iceberg.” What you see on the surface is only part of the problem. Many more tumor cells grow outward and downward like tree roots, which are invisible to the naked eye, but are visible under a microscope. During Mohs surgery, tissue layers are removed one by one. After removal, their edges are dyed a certain color, allowing for the creation of a map. Microscope slides are created by a technician and examined carefully by the surgeon so the precise outlines of the roots of the cancer can be seen. This method allows the surgeon to remove cancerous cells, but leaves surrounding, healthy skin cells intact.

Why Do I Need Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery represents the highest standard of care for skin cancer and has the highest cure rate. It is optimal for skin cancer that: * Is located where surrounding healthy tissue must remain for functional or cosmetic reasons * Is found near existing scar tissue * Was previously treated but has returned * Is growing uncontrollably or rapidly * Does not have clear borders * Is aggressive * Is found in lymphoma patients or those with organ transplants

How Long Will Mohs Surgery Take?

Mohs surgery can take longer than other methods, but technological advances have made it faster. There is no one answer for each individual patient, but the treatment usually takes multiple hours. A consultation with our surgeon offers an opportunity to understand each step of the procedure and the expected time frame.
