How BOTOX Injections Work for Hyperhidrosis

Everybody sweats. Sweating is just a natural part of life, especially when you exert yourself, when you’re under stress, or when you are hot. For individuals who are dealing with hyperhidrosis, sweating goes from natural perspiration to being a constant source of frustration and embarrassment. BOTOX injections have been shown to help individuals battling with hyperhidrosis to get control of their sweating.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition where your body sweats profusely all of the time for no reason. Individuals who are battling with hyperhidrosis have to deal with the frustration and embarrassment that comes from having armpits that are constantly wet. Their clothing is stained from sweat. Antiperspirants, even expensive prescription antiperspirants, do not produce the desired results.

BOTOX injections work by temporarily relaxing muscles. Most people associate BOTOX injections with cosmetic treatments. However, the same mechanisms that allow this treatment to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles also help to reduce the excessive sweating in individuals with hyperhidrosis.

The treatment works by interfering with the nerves that tell your sweat glands to activate. The BOTOX injections will only work in the areas where they are injected. Overall, the treatment is quick and effective. While it does not produce permanent results, it does produce long-term results that can be repeated with follow-up injections.

Am I a Good Candidate for BOTOX Injections?

BOTOX® for hyperhidrosis is considered to be the last line of defense for severe heavy sweating. Before turning to this treatment, it’s recommended that you look at other options, including sweat proof clothing and prescription deodorants. If these do not work, then this treatment is available to help with hyperhidrosis of the armpits that cannot be treated through other means.

As with any other medical treatment, your health and your understanding of the treatment play a role in the effectiveness of it. Since BOTOX® injections have been approved by the FDA to address excessive underarm sweat, it may even be covered by your insurance.

What to Expect

The entire treatment is fairly quick and easy. You can opt to shave your armpits or not, as it is not usually required. Our doctor will make a map around your armpit and outline the injection points. Our doctor will know where you sweat and will lay out an injection plan based on your armpit layout.

The treatment takes about seven days to kick in. Once it kicks in, you’re going to notice that your armpits are relatively dry, and they will stay dry for a number of months.
