Chemical Peels: Understanding the Different Types

Chemical peels are one of the best treatments for rejuvenating the skin without the need for hospitalization or significant downtime. As the name suggests, the treatment involves the use of some type of chemical solution to remove part of the outer skin that has been damaged by prolonged sun exposure, aging, or other factors.

When it comes to peels, there are three basic depths: light, medium, and deep. Peels are categorized by their ingredients, strength of concentration, and depth of penetration. The type that would work best for you and your individual needs can be best determined at your initial consultation.

A Light Peel

A light peel is a superficial treatment that involves the use of mild acids. Since very little damage is done to the skin, no real downtime or sedation is required. Light peels work best for treating very light wrinkles, enlarged pores, and superficial acne scars. The gentle nature of a light peel may mean that multiple treatments are required to achieve the best results.

A Medium Peel

Medium chemical peels are best-suited when you need treatment for light lines and wrinkles, light scars, or hyperpigmentation. Generally speaking, they involve the removal of some of the epidermis skin layer to trigger the formation of new skin tissue that is less affected by signs of aging and sun damage.

A Deep Peel

A deep peel is only used for the most serious skin conditions like deep wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and deeper scars. If you undergo this form of treatment, you will require some downtime.

What About Aftercare?

Since chemical peels affect the barrier function of your skin, you will need to take some care both before and after your treatment. For example, you’ll want to avoid prolonged sun exposure before and after a peel treatment. You should also use a good moisturizer and maintain a good skin care routine.
