Reduce the Appearance of Acne Scars with Medium Chemical Peels

Chemical peels have the capability to dramatically change the appearance of the skin, and they minimize or eliminate the appearance of skin imperfections like acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. It’s a huge relief to many patients to realize they can have the complexion they’ve always wanted without invasive surgeries, injections, or expensive creams that don’t work.

What is a Medium Chemical Peel?

There are three types of chemical peel: light, medium, and deep. A medium chemical peel is an effective choice for reducing the appearance of acne scars.

Medium peels treat the top layers of skin while a light chemical peel only treats the very top layer. Deep chemical peels go deep enough that they may require a couple of weeks of recovery.

The top layers of skin are the ones most affected by acne scarring, fine lines, sun damage, and uneven pigmentation. Deep, pitted acne scars don’t respond well to medium peels, so severe scarring may be best addressed with dermal fillers or a deep chemical peel.

The Peel Process

Medium chemical peels offer pretty dramatic results after just one peel, but patients may see optimal results in the appearance of their acne scars after a few peels that have been safely spaced out.

Recovery

The new layers of skin are sensitive, so they’re typically red and may be tender to the touch. The redness eventually disappears, and patients notice a dramatic improvement in the appearance of their skin. The total healing time for a typical medium peel may vary.

Patients may need to avoid prolonged sun exposure during the recovery phase, diligently applying sunscreen every day, and ensuring the face stays moisturized. Patients are able to return to their normal activities after a few days, but due to the amount of peeling, many people opt to take a week or so off from work/school.

Possible Side Effects

Mild side effects may include redness, manageable discomfort, and minor swelling. Discomfort can be controlled with over the counter pain relievers, and pain medications will also control any swelling. Scarring and long-term skin discoloration are possible but rare.
