How Often Should I Have Moles Checked?

Got moles? You aren’t alone. One out of a hundred people is born with a mole and many others develop moles throughout their lifetime. Moles can be large or small, come in a variety of shapes, and may vary in color. If moles are so common, how are you supposed to know when you need to get a mole checked out? No matter what your dermatological needs might be, there are a few things you need to know about moles.

First off, you should schedule a skin check once each year at Steele Creek Dermatology. This gives your provider a chance to examine your skin and ensure that each mole is appropriately colored and sized. Sometimes your doctor may notice something you don’t, so it’s important not to skip skin checks. During your yearly skin exam, your doctor will check your body to look for any abnormalities. They may also measure any existing moles you have. Your doctor will mark this in your chart to compare against your next exam.

It’s also important to have any moles checked that you have questions about. If you have a mole you didn’t notice before, but that looks strange, go ahead and schedule a visit. Your doctor will be able to talk with you about what makes a mole normal or abnormal. Your physician can also advise you as to what you need to watch for and when you should consider having a mole removed.

If you happen to notice any changes in an existing mole, visit your provider. When a mole changes color, becomes larger, or develops uneven borders, you may need to have it removed by your provider. Typically, this is something that can be done directly in the office during your visit. Having a mole removed is a simple process. Make sure you follow your care provider’s instructions for aftercare when you have a mole removed. Proper caring will ensure your skin heals as quickly and as well as possible.

Remember that it’s vital you have moles checked as soon as possible if you suspect a problem. A skin check is a simple process that can help determine whether a mole is healthy or not. One of our professionals can diagnose any issues directly in the office, so don’t wait to get the help you need. Contact Steele Creek Dermatology today to schedule your consultation!
