What is IPL?

IPL, or Intense Pulse Light, is a non-invasive, non-ablative laser based treatment used to improve a broad range of skin concerns. Because this technique utilizes relatively gentle wavelengths of laser energy delivered in a series of pulses, patients experience no downtime and minimal discomfort before, during, and after the procedure.

How Does it Work?

Traditional laser treatments deliver a single wavelength of laser energy to the skin in one continuous stream. While this works well for certain kinds of skin rejuvenation treatments, it is often not the most effective method for patients that want to improve the appearance of excessive redness, vascular lesions, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage.

Treatment with an IPL laser is specially tailored to address these conditions in a safe and effective manner. IPL stands for intense pulsed light therapy; this acronym provides a quick, general description of how IPL laser skin treatments deliver laser energy to the skin. During treatment, a variety of wavelengths of laser energy are aimed at the patient’s target treatment and sent deep into the skin through a series of pulses. The different structures within the skin responsible for the different signs of aging absorb each of these wavelengths, rupturing the responsible structures and stimulating the body’s natural healing process. Over time, this results in smoother, healthier, younger-looking skin.

What can IPL be used to Treat?

  • Redness
  • Vascular lesions
  • Pigmented lesions
  • Freckles and age spots
  • Mild wrinkles and fine lines

What can I Expect from an IPL Laser Skin Treatment?

Each Sciton IPL treatment typically takes no more than 20 minutes to complete. However, treatment times can vary depending on each patient’s desired treatment areas and cosmetic goals. While some improvements can be seen after the first treatment, we recommend that patients undergo between four and six sessions every three to six weeks for optimal results.

Am I a Candidate for IPL Treatments?

If you’re interested in improving the appearance of mild fine lines, wrinkles, facial marks, or pigmentation, you may qualify for treatment with the IPL laser. However, because every patient is different, a member of our medical staff will first take into account your current state of health and aesthetic goals to decide if this treatment is right for you.
