How Does PRP Treatment Work?

PRP treatment is an innovative method that involves using components from the patient’s blood to speed up the healing process and rejuvenate the treatment area. At Steele Creek Dermatology in Charlotte, NC, we offer PRP for facial rejuvenation and hair loss. Both treatments are minimally invasive and suitable for a wide range of patients.

How Does PRP Treatment Work?

A PRP session only takes around half an hour. When you arrive, we take your blood and process it to extract the beneficial platelets and plasma. Then, we apply a numbing agent to your skin. Once you can no longer feel the treatment area, we inject the PRP in strategic places. You can leave and resume most activities straight after your appointment.

Over the next few weeks, the platelets in your face or scalp release growth factors that stimulate the production of healthy cells. This makes you look younger or restores your thick head of hair. Most people need to come to the clinic three to six times for the best results. They might also need maintenance appointments once a year after their initial treatment is over.

PRP for Facial Rejuvenation

In our early 20s, our bodies start to produce less of the structural proteins collagen and elastin. A few years later, we notice the first wrinkles because the skin is no longer as firm and elastic as before. PRP for facial rejuvenation is the perfect treatment because it encourages the body to replace old cells with healthy ones.

Sometimes, this treatment is combined with microneedling, a process that involves using tiny needles to create channels in the skin. The micro-injuries stimulate the body’s healing process and encourage it to rejuvenate the tissues. They also make it easier for the PRP to penetrate the deeper skin layers, so the effect of the treatment is enhanced.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Most people who would like to rejuvenate their facial features are good candidates for PRP. If you’re in your 20s or 30s, the injections work very well because your tissues are still smooth and the signs of aging aren’t pronounced. If you’re 40 or older, you might need to combine several treatments to achieve the best results.

During your consultation, we’ll review your medical history to make sure PRP is safe for you. If you’re being treated for a serious medical condition, speak to your doctor before taking part. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding aren’t eligible.

PRP for Hair Loss

Most men and approximately 50% of women experience hair loss at some point in life. Come to the clinic as soon as you start noticing changes in your hair. PRP for hair loss works much better when the issue is addressed early. People who are already completely bald in the treatment area are no longer eligible for this particular treatment.

During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss how many sessions you need. Treatment typically takes at least three to six months because not all hair follicles are in the growth stage at the same time. After the session, you can return home or to work on your own. After 24 hours, you can wash your hair and participate in almost all your regular activities again.

Am I a Good Candidate?

You’re a good candidate for hair loss treatment if you are experiencing thinning hair due to aging or stress. Sometimes, PRP also works well for people who have lost their hair due to chemo or a similar treatment. We accept both men and women, but we’re only able to help patients who still have hair at the treatment site because the follicles need to still be active.

Patients who have aging-related hair loss need maintenance sessions at least once a year. Those who have lost their hair due to stress might not need to come back if they’ve resolved the underlying issues and are now enjoying better mental health.

What Results Can I Expect?

PRP results aren’t instantaneous because the platelets need some time to release their growth factors and stimulate the production of new cells. Most patients notice the first changes after two or three weeks, and the results continue to intensify until the three-month mark. Since people have up to six sessions, one month apart, it might take nine months for the final results to become visible.

Most people maintain their youthful-looking skin or thick head of hair for at least a year. Once the results start to fade, they can come back to the clinic and have another injection. PRP is effective on its own, but it works even better when combined with microneedling, BOTOX and fillers, and IPL treatment. We also encourage all our patients to use high-quality skin care products that keep the outer skin layer healthy and moisturized.
